Fireworks

Went for the fireworks display at Kenilworth Castle as part of Guy Fawkes' Day celebration - the French guy planted a tonne of bombs beneath the House of Parliament and his plans to bomb the place got foiled. So the king ordered to celebrate that day in commemoration that he wasn't blasted away. Haha~! Had handmade toffee apple in the cold and it was nicer than the commercial ones in US, except for that caramel and nuts one I had in Tuscola. *slurps*

Theme of the display was classic hits from movies, thus we had soundtracks from West Wing, Titanic and Indiana Jones (there were more, but I couldn't recognise them). Think the display 2 years ago was nicer, 'cos it was classic and evergreen music, gave a more English feel to it. Nonetheless, it was very nice. Hmm... Despite having thousands of people, we never had to face the situation of cramming shoulder to shoulder; this is where I realise the English have a strong notion of what it means by 'personal space' here. Think it was worth paying that 6 quid for the display, 'cos there was a clear view, and we're so near the fireworks, it felt like we could touch them by reaching out. *sizzle*

Hmm... Fireworks are conventionally deemed as transient beauty (mono no aware), and that's what makes it so cherished. Many of us try to capture it onto videos and cameras, but they'd never be as nice as watching it live, and meanwhile, we didn't enjoy during the display 'cos we're too busy capturing it.

The first ones I've seen were from my 17th storey flat at Boon Lay during NDP, and thought they were the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Got to watch it even closer during NDP performance in 1999, and realise the sightings in Boon Lay were nothing compared to this. Came Guy Fawkes' Day plus the series of setting off our own fireworks at the field behind Arthur Vick in 2003, that was even more impressive. Yet, this was when fireworks started to have a melancholic tinge to it - the feeling of things missing in life become stark. Further fireworks displays were accompanied by failed promises and memories of how fireworks used to bring so much happiness, be it at NDP 2004, Navy Pier in Chicago, Disneyland countdown 2005 at LA.

Probably the ones at Boon Lay were the best indeed.

My stained and broken heart.
