"Singapore? Is that part of China? Or near China?"
For the third time the past week, people ask me this question. Weird, though I heard of people telling me such things do happen, it never happened in the UK. Interesting.
Stayed in the room the whole morning and afternoon even though the rest (i.e. Zhi Xiu, Jonathan, Jermyn, Shen Ting and Yee Lin) went for lunch and ice skating at the Ice Arena, because I wanted to email the lecturers and get things over and done with. Don't know what was wrong, in the first place; woke up on the wrong side of the bed, which was partly why I didn't feel like going out. Then my internet was down around 10 plus in the morning, due to some virus in my computer, they disabled the internet access. As many people were moving yesterday, the Net Technicians were very busy as well, so all I could do was wait.
Around 2, there was a knock on my door, and it was this Afro-Amercican who's looking for Beth, my room mate. Beth was out the whole day as an Illini guide to facilitate moving for other students. So her friend (whom I later got to know that she's called Dellareese) came in and waited. We started talking for around 1 hour plus, during which the technician came. The focus here is on the talk with Dellareese, who's from the city of Chicago. Surprisingly, I found it extremely comfortable to talk to her. Was caught by surprise when she asked me what stereotypes I've heard about the blacks. Told her about the rapping, and the braided hair. And she told me erm... They usually wash their hair every 2 weeks; but she said,"I usually wash it once a week." I nodded my head empathetically, and asked if they were to exercise would they wash their hair? Oh well, guess the answer... Hee hee... All I'll say is, I think they'd be very surprised to know Singaporeans wash their hair on average once a day or sometimes even twice a day. Guess it's a blessing in disguise, though I missed the ice-skating, I made a new friend!
Got to know Beth's friends after that: CC, Shannon and Kathy. Shannon and Kathy are room mates since last year, and this year, Kathy brought a couch and put it in the room. I was seriously impressed how it could fit so snugly in the room and make it look so cosy. Went for the floor meeting; beginning to feel apprehensive of the future living on this floor, but trying not to let that get to me. Had my first catered dinner at FAR. MY GOD! At this rate I'm going, will put on a lot of weight: There was bbq-ed chicken, pasta, steak, soup, wide variety of salad, all sorts of drinks (soft drinks, juices, milk), ice-cream and banana creme pie. Had chicken, pasta and salad. Realised I'm eating the typical amount as others. This is really really freaking me out. =(
Especially when I feel that I'm already controlling, i.e. I wasn't like full to the brim after my meal. Yee Lin told me (which came from her senior) about Freshmen 15 - Freshmen usually put on 15 pounds after the first year. Eh, I'm a junior (3rd year), not freshman, is that going to make a difference?
Went for the Illini Union late-nighter that Zhensi highly recommended with Yee Lin and Daniel. Ah, proved to be quite a disappointment, mainly because there weren't as much a crowd as I had expected. Watched a hynoptist performance, very skeptical about it. Oh well, always take all performances with a pinch of salt. Then went around, watched the dance competition; Yee Lin and I concluded figure is really essential in performance arts - the dancers who were more plump looked like 'aunties' dancing, quite bad, but true... The break dancers were good though. Watched the last 15 minutes of a comedy performance, Alfred and Seymour, by then it was nearly midnight, sadly Yee Lin and I were falling asleep over it. So we left after that. Was so tired that we had to drag our feet back; what usually took like 20 minutes, took us 1 hour to get back. Knocked out after that.... Zzzz.....
