"Dear passengers, please remain in your seats and fasten your seat belts due to the thunderstorm in Chicago, because the weather would just get worse before it gets better..."
"Please also help the person sitting beside you check if his or her seat belt is fastened securely if he's sleeping like a mop..."
For the first time, I hear an air stewardress speaking in that manner over the announcement system. Always thought as much an air stewardress is termed as "waitress in the air", there's a much higher level of professionalism involved. Hmm... Oh well, I should be glad I touched down safely.
Had my breakfast at Chicago O'Hare Airport, ordered tacos, and found myself with a humongous plate with a pile of potato wedges, and 2 cheese filled scrambled eggs on the tacos. How sinful can it get! (N.B: I did not finish the food) I must finish reading my Fast Food Nation soon!
When I touched down at Willard Airport, Champaign, was very surprised to see the words "Welcome to University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign" on a signboard, as if it's part of the airport. (Later that night, I found out the airport was indeed, owned by the school for students who study aviation and for commercial purposes - one of the Singapore seniors was doing that course, to become a pilot)
UIUC is surrounded by loads and loads of cornfields, and it's a self-sufficient campus university, with 3 streets of shopping, entertainment and restaurants, and also other eateries located and various parts of the campus. There is at least 5 chinese, 2 thai and 2 korean restaurants, haven't got around exploring the whole place. Also, there's a tattoo and piercing shop, 2 hair dressing saloons and a tanning shop. Hmm... Got demand = got supply, so does that mean erm... Hmm...
Luckily I met Sang Hyun, a korean fresher doing computer science, he brought Lin-Te (another new friend of mine, taiwanese) and I to have our ID cards made, and to make a visit to the health centre. Also, I was to stay at a temporary room for tonight, with 2 taiwanese girls, Jia Qi and Wei Chun, and I was really thankful for them - Did not bring any blanket from Singapore (at least I had my bolster), was really cold at night and they gave me one of their sleeping bags and they shared one. Wonder how many of these friends would I be keeping by the end of the year? (N.B: There was Andrew, John and Chin Hau last year in Warwick, whom all I didn't really see around anymore after school started)
Finally met Zhensi today (the "my father's friend's daughter" who is the internal vice president of Singapore Society)! All the correspondence over emails the past few months... She's really quite different from what I expected: instead of being Ms Prim and Proper, she was drinking beer from Milwaukee and we watched Sex and the City together, hahaha~ Also met 4 Singapore freshers: Yee Lin, Shen Ting, Jermyn and Zhi Xiu. Zhensi gave me a Poptart for breakfast the next morning, knowing that I had nothing to eat - nice!
