Just had the first lesson of the semester: Introduction to Ethics. Heh, it was only 10 minutes long, but I had been given my first homework: to read a chapter of the textbook before Friday's class. Alright, guess I'll have to put Fast Food Nation aside for a while. Textbooks are really expensive here: bought 2 thin (1 used, 1 new) textbook for nearly US$70! My god, I thought they would cost $20 the most.. *heartache*
Received Jennifer's email today; she said I made things difficult for her by approaching the professors to ask whether I have the academic pre-requisites to enter the classes. (BUT, I managed to get another module: Legal Environment of Business, YAY!!!) Feel quite bad about it, especially after talking to Alex, another exchange student from Warwick, yesterday. Apparently Alex gotten a confirmed place in the core module, International Business. He's doing Accounting and Finance degree, which is more specialised than my Management Science one. And he can't get a single accounting module here because accounting in UIUC is top in US; it is too competitive that non-degree, i.e. least priority students like us will definitely not be allowed int. Alex said that he'll either have to go for the classes without credits, and take the re-sits back in Warwick during September in hope they will allow him to continue holding onto an Accy & Fin BSc, or he'll just switch to Man Sci. Basically he's quite cool about the whole thing, which makes me really guilty, 'cos if I really want, I can just do the same thing about my International Business (but it will mean going back to UK a month earlier from my summer break, and also having to study for it the whole summer break), just that I'm hoping to take the easy way out... Anyway Alex said Nick (another exchange student) is also facing the same problem as I do, so we'll just keep our fingers crossed.
Warwick, or rather, Justin McArthur, the guy in charge of exchange at Warwick, hasn't given me a reply. Getting a bit worried that he may approach the Dean or something here, and the Dean may go to Jennifer, and at the end of the day, everyone's unhappy and worst of all, Jennifer may take it out on me. Oh well... What is done is done. Jia lat, I still can't seem to register for my business law module, jia lat, I don't want to approach Jennifer again leh... (hoping to minimise all contact with her) K, maybe the system is not updated yet, about time to go for the next class: International Business. Since I'm a freeloader, better reach there early, or else no seats. Hopefully later I'll be able to register for the law module!
P.s. To all those who's been giving me support from Singapore, thanks a lot...! (You know who you are, and me too!)

Got my law module already! Congrats to me! Left International Business; but I think that isn't going to be a problem, 'cos the lesson went well just now - the class wasn't bursting with people and could function just as well. Hopefully if students don't drop out, they will increase the intake of students for this class.. *keeps fingers crossed* In the worst scenario, see if I can take Decision making for accounting instead, since accounting in UIUC is top in US.
Today's IB class was quite funny; got an Indonesian Chinese, Dr Haryanto for our teacher. He was trying to bring a point across: Democracy doesn't imply a prosperous country. He cited the example of Singapore. Even though I bet at least half the class don't know what and where's Singapore, I was grinning away...
Later, I went for Principles of Marketing, and I'm going to get something exciting - an 'I-clicker'! It's like a remote control for us to use during lectures for polling purposes. For instance, when the lecturer ask whether we find the exam easy, we'll key in our opinion and it'll be consolidated and shown on the screen. In every remote control, we'll have an ID, so they can identify who are the students present, in turn those present would be given credit! Cool right? Haha~ 'Cos it's a trial (every I-clicker costs US$40) there's only 5 classes in the whole school (note: The undergrad population is 28000, and 10000 post-grad students approximately) getting it. But however, for marketing, there's going to be 3 exams and 6 quizzes during the semester, which equates almost "every other week". Good, I need this.
Talked on the phone with Jingyi for 40 minutes, hee hee... Starhub prepaid cards rulez!!! Seems like I've not talked so much for so long... Maybe 4 hours? HAHAHAHAHAHA~

thats realli cool! (refering to the I-Clicker)
Reminded me of Who wants to be a millionaire? Ask the audience sector.
Seriously speaking, think if a very good system to gauge the general opinion of the papers, which will help greatly in the teacher-student interaction. Papers can be greatly tailored to student's needs this was (in some ways, no paper is a good paper). But one disadvantage is that with democracy, manipulators will come...
Jokingly speaking, here are some humble suggestions for other topics that can be polled:
1. Is this lecturer boring? (positive feedback)
2. Where are good places to eat after a boring lecture like this? (list favs)
3. Who is the hottest guy/girl in this LT rite now? (list favs) a la Singapore Idol
OK, should stop here and stop making myself look like a complete problem student.
Xiuli!!!!
Oh my god, read your blog, It sounds so so interesting. I think that I-clicker thing is very high tech, and if we were to use it in Singapore, oh well, that would be great. wahhaa, but not willing to spend US$40 for that! =þ crapping!
I hope your module stuffs will be settled soon. Hope to chat with you again. Meanwhile, enjoy your stay there and Good Luck!
Take care!
Polgara.
